FAFSA on the Web

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can easily be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Web saves you processing time. It also increases the accuracy and completeness of your application due to the edits performed by the system. FAFSA on the Web is secure. You can feel confident submitting your information in this format.

When completing FAFSA on the Web, keep in mind the following:

  • FAFSA on the Web offers the ability to print out worksheets and other items to help you organize your materials and easily apply for financial aid.

  • Use your PIN number to electronically sign your FAFSA on the Web. If you do not recall your U.S. Department of Education-issued PIN number, wish to change it, or need to register for one, simply go to www.pin.ed.gov.

  • One parent (for students who are required to submit parental information) should also register for a PIN number. Because it is a personal identification number, the parent can use this same PIN number for their electronic signature each year and for each child with whom they are applying.

  • If you do not have a PIN number, you must print and mail a signature page with your signature (and your parent's signature, if you were required to submit parent data) as soon as you electronically submit your data. The signature sheet provides a mailing address. Your application will be rejected if the signature sheet is not received within 2 weeks.

  • If a signature page is not received in time, you will be sent a Student Aid Report (SAR) that will need to be signed and mailed back to the federal processor. Your application is incomplete until this is done.

RENEWING YOUR FAFSA IN FUTURE YEARS
Students who filed a FAFSA last year can enter their PIN number to have portions of their new year's FAFSA pre-populated when using www.fafsa.ed.gov. Since many of the basic data elements of the FAFSA do not change (name, date of birth, etc.), the FAFSA on the Web will ask you to confirm last year's information and provide updated information for elements such as grade level and the income sections.

CORRECTIONS ON THE WEB
Once your FAFSA is submitted and you receive a Student Aid Report (SAR), you may need to make corrections to data elements. If so, you can use your PIN at www.fafsa.ed.gov to access and change information.

Note: You should not attempt to correct student Social Security number via the Web or on the paper SAR. Anytime the student Social Security number needs correcting, a new FAFSA (paper or via the Web) must be submitted.

Students and parents can use their personal identification number (PIN) to electronically sign their FAFSA. The student's PIN will also access other U.S. Department of Education resources via the Web.

You can request a PIN or change your PIN to a number you can recall easily at www.pin.ed.gov.
